About Jenny

JENNY GAND

I’m a Vienna-based director who was born in East-Berlin in 1978.

I’m working in the film industry since 1998 and started working as a director in 2008.

My work covers commercials and narrative fashion/ music videos as well as shorts and a documentary.

In my work I’m often dealing with the subject of memory and special places which have a magical appeal. So for me it´s more about letting the story and characters develop out of their inner quest or their surrounding.

To be dedicated to work with people, on stories, with actors and carve out the essence - story- and visual-wise, is my great ambition.

I grew up among an adventurous surrounding in the East-Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg.

Besides living in a socialist country where you´re used to having less and being politically influenced, life was exciting - during childhood of course.

At the age of 11, three month before the wall came down, in the summer of 1989, I went with my mother from East- to West-Berlin and a new life started. It was a challenge not to be the outsider from the East.

I studied german literature, philosophy & art history at The University of Cologne.

Throughout my studies I gained experience in numerous film & drama productions and I also started off as a filmmaker, by making my first shorts between 2001 and 2004.

After I graduated with a master degree I went to work in Vienna as an assistant director at the Burgtheater.

Although accepted for a master in directing at Hamburg Media School (HMS) some years later, I decided to attend the master class for TV- & filmproduction at the Danube University Krems

and made my first feature length documentary WILD MINT.

In 2014 my 4th shortfilm SNOWDROP had its premiere in the competition at the 35th Film Festival Max Ophüls and the fashion film YLVA attended several international fashion film festivals.

As a director I’m currently working on my first feature “Mauerland” which is in the script development stage and was part of the Diverse stories programm in 2014. I’m also a co-chairwoman at the board of ADA Austrian Directors’ Association, rookie-member of the drehbuchFORUM Vienna and member of FC Gloria and Sorority.
